For example, the time for Fajr in New York City will be different from the time for Fajr in Riyadh.

Time of Year: The time of year also affects prayer times. The changing seasons and the tilt of the Earth’s axis cause variations in the length of days and nights. During the summer, days are longer, and nights are shorter, resulting in earlier Fajr and later Isha times. Conversely, in the winter, days are shorter, and nights are longer, leading to later Fajr and earlier Isha times.

Methods of Calculation

Traditional methods of determining prayer times rely on natural indicators such as shadow lengths and the observation of the sky. These methods are still relevant and widely used in various parts of the world.

Using shadow lengths: Shadow lengths have been a primary method for calculating the times of Dhuhr (midday) and Asr (afternoon) prayers. This method involves observing the shadow cast by an object and using its length relative to the object’s height.

Angle of the Sun Relative to the Horizon: The sun’s angle relative to the horizon is very important in determining prayer times, especially for Fajr (dawn) and Isha (night). This angle is often referred to as the zenith angle.

For Fajr, the sun is approximately 18 degrees below the horizon, signaling the end of the night and the beginning of the pre-dawn light. For Isha, the sun is also around 18 degrees below the horizon, marking the disappearance of twilight.

Solar Declination and Its Effect: Solar declination (δ) refers to the angle formed between the sun’s rays and the Earth’s equatorial plane. It changes during the year as the Earth orbits the sun. With the sun’s rotation around its orbit, it affects the duration of daylight and the altitude of the sun at various times.

Equation of Time: The Equation of Time accounts for the discrepancy between solar time (based on the actual position of the sun) and clock time. This discrepancy arises due to the elliptical shape of Earth’s orbit and the tilt of its axis. The Equation of Time helps adjust the observed solar time to mean solar time.

Common Calculation Methods

Muslim World League (MWL)

The Muslim World League, headquartered in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is one of the most influential Islamic organizations globally. MWL’s prayer calculation method is widely used due to its balance of precision and adaptability. The MWL sets Fajr (dawn) prayer time when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon and Isha (night) prayer when it is 17 degrees below the horizon. 

Umm al-Qura University

Located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Umm al-Qura University is famous for its academic and religious scholarship. The Umm al-Qura prayer time calculation is specifically made for the city of Mecca but has found broader application due to its precision.

m Fajr prayer is calculated when the sun is 18.5 degrees below the horizon, and Isha is calculated when the sun is 90 minutes after the Maghrib (sunset) prayer. ISNA’s prayer time calculation method is tailored to the unique geographical and climatic conditions of North America. Fajr is set at 15 degrees below the horizon, and Isha is set at 15 degrees as well.

University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi

The University of Islamic Sciences in Karachi, Pakistan, offers a prayer time calculation method primarily to provide prayer time for the South Asian region. Fajr prayer is calculated when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon, and Isha prayer is also 18 degrees below the horizon.
